Johannesburg - The South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) is demanding involvement in the 2010 Soccer World Cup bid committees, the trade union said on Monday.
"We are demanding a role in the 2010 bid committees in municipalities across the country - so that we can force companies who win the tenders to build stadiums to set minimum labour standards," Eastern Cape provincial secretary Siphiwo Ndunyana said.
"Samwu does not want to see public money being abused... Those companies winning tenders to build stadiums must pay workers a minimum wage plus benefits, because they are being paid a huge amount of money for winning those tenders."
He said the union was concerned that there was no open disclosure of how much public money went towards actual building costs and how much was being kept by companies as profit.
"Samwu in the Eastern Cape is going to start throwing its weight behind the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) in their strikes at the 2010 stadiums," he said
"Samwu Eastern Cape will never allow a process like 2010 to become one of enriching a few - at the expense of proper wages and health and safety standards for the workers," Ndunyana said.
