Johannesburg - Revised rail safety procedures will
contribute to productivity in the work place, the SA Chamber of Commerce and
Industry (Sacci) said on Thursday.
"Sacci believes that the implementation of the revised
procedures... will improve safety for all Metrorail passengers and contribute
to productivity in the work place which is negatively impacted by rail
accidents," said Sacci president Chose Choeu.
He said Metrorail played a vital role in the country's
economy.
"The majority of the 2.4 million passengers that are
transported on 2 200 trains each day are commuters - persons employed in
commerce and industry - who keep the wheels of the economy turning.
"It is therefore imperative that rail accidents be
eliminated as far as humanly possible."
Two trains collided in Meadowlands a week ago, injuring 857
people.
A train driver died and 200 people were injured when two trains collided between Akasiaboom and Winternest train stations, in Pretoria, in early April.
