Sactwu settles leather wage talks

Johannesburg - Trade union SA Clothing and Textile Workers' Union (Sactwu) has settled wage negotiations in the leather tanning sector for the year, it said on Tuesday.

"This follows on a two-year agreement reached with the South African Tanning Employers Organisation last year," SA Clothing and Textile Workers' Union general secretary Andre Kriel said in a statement.

A seven percent increase on prescribed minimum wages for the sector would come into effect on July 1.

"In addition, workers in the non-auto tanning section will receive an increase in their annual bonus, of an additional one day's pay," Kriel said.

The agreement was reached under the auspices of the national bargaining council for the leather sector.

About 3 100 workers employed in 32 tanning factories nationwide would benefit from the agreement.
