Sacrifices by youth were in vain - IFP

Johannesburg – The sacrifices made by the youth of 1976 were in vain, the Inkatha Freedom Party said in a statement on Wednesday.

In celebration of Youth Month the Inkatha Freedom Party in Gauteng (IFP-Gauteng) and the IFP Youth Brigade (IFPYB) called for youth development to be made a priority in memory of the sacrifices made by the youth of 1976.

These sacrifices should be used to spur on action to improve the lives of South Africans, especially the youth, said the IFP-Gauteng.

Statistics SA reported an unemployment rate of 25,2% for the first quarter of 2013. At 30,4% unemployment in Gauteng was the highest in the country and represents 1,8m people.

In the first quarter of 2013, the formal sector lost 25 000 jobs and the informal sector lost 13 000, while employment increased in agriculture by 54 000 and in private households by 29 000 people respectively.

According to the IFP-Gauteng the challenges faced by the youth in South Africa range from unemployment to the inability to access basic quality education.

These are obvious proof to the IFP-Gauteng that the selfless acts of courage, commitment and willingness to give up one’s life, as demonstrated by the youth of 1976, were in vain.

“The IFP-Gauteng finds it more than disheartening that youth development and youth unemployment remains some of the most complex challenges facing our country, 37 years after the extraordinary commitment made by the South African youth in search of improved living conditions and educational conditions,” said the Gauteng office.

“It is demeaning that our young people and future leaders are the most affected by socioeconomic factors such as HIV/Aids, poverty, unplanned pregnancies, and lack of participation in political discourse and development processes.”

“The IFP in Gauteng would, therefore, like to pose this serious question to this government: After 58 years of the adoption of the Freedom Charter, what truth is there in referring to the youth as the ‘free generation’ when they are not free to work because of lack of jobs, no money for transport nor free to equip themselves with education, because the education system is failing dismally,” said Bonginkosi Dhlamini, IFP caucus leader in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL).
