Johannesburg - South Africa’s trade deficit widened to R9.9bn in April from a R5.5bn shortfall in March, the South African Revenue Service said on Thursday.
Exports fell by 14.9% and imports were down by 7.2% on a month-on-month basis in April of this year, the data showed.
Economists had expected a R4.5bn trade gap, although the
data is volatile and hard to forecast.
The trade deficit was R2.4bn in April 2011.
