Bus strike set to bring Joburg to a halt

Johannesburg - Traffic will be interrupted in the Johannesburg CBD and surrounding areas on Tuesday when striking Satawu members march, metro police said.

The SA Transport and Allied Workers' Union members were expected to gather at Pieter Roos Park in Parktown at 10:00, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said on Monday.

They would make their way to the offices of the National Bargaining Council and the Private Security Sector Provident Fund in the city centre. The march was scheduled to end at Park Station at 14:00.

"There will be officers during the march who will be directing traffic," said Minnaar.

On Monday Satawu said it would stick to its wage demand for bus drivers.

"We remain steadfast in our demand for a double-digit increase of 13% for our members....We are not going to back down," union spokesperson Vincent Masoga said.

Unions are demanding a 13% wage increase, down from the original 18%, and allowances for housing, night shift, and long-distance journeys.

The strike, which was affecting commuters countrywide, entered its third week on Monday.
