SANBS in line with equity legislation

Johannesburg - The transformation strategy of the SA National Blood Services was in line with the Employment Equity Act, CEO Loyiso Mpuntsha said on Monday.

"Although this process may be uncomfortable to accept by some, SANBS strives to and will continue to comply with legislation and the Bill of Rights as enshrined in our Constitution."

On Friday, trade union Solidarity said it would seek to act against the SANBS after two of its employees complained about the organisation's employment policy.

Solidarity vowed to approach the courts for clarity on whether an employer could place an absolute embargo on applications from certain racial groups for job vacancies.

Mpuntsha said the company adopted a "space creation" strategy targeting middle to senior management to allow SANBS to address employment equity gaps at these levels.

"Outside of this, SANBS applies the standard recruitment process, which allows for any suitably skilled and qualified applicants to apply for any vacancy."

Solidarity deputy general secretary Dirk Hermann said on Sunday that SANBS had advertised job vacancies for which only black South Africans could apply.

"The blood service embarked on a space creation strategy and offered severance packages to white employees older than 55, thereby creating 13 vacancies," he said.

"The blood service was now advertising these vacancies for black employees only".

Solidarity has been engaged in a debate with Woolworths over similar job advertising policies.

Hermann said the principle had to be tested in court.

"We call on the public to bleed for the principle by donating blood and then voicing their objection. By no means do we want the court action to cause people to stop donating blood," said Hermann.
