Johannesburg - A senior executive at South African Airways (SAA) has jumped ship and joined Eskom as one of three senior appointments, the power utility announced on Wednesday.

SAA human resources general manager Bhabhalazi Bulunga will be starting at Eskom in the same position from February, together with new primary energy MD Dan Marokane. They will join new finance director Paul O'Flaherty, who will move to Eskom in January.

Bulunga has been with SAA since 2007 and oversaw the restructuring of that parastatal in 2008, when it trimmed its bloated staff by about 3 000 employees to reach profitability in the 2009 financial year.

Marokane has spent the last 11 years at energy utility PetroSA. He is currently the vice-president for the operations division (since March 2007). Marokane is also a director of PetroSA Nigeria, PetroSA Europe and Brass Exploration in Nigeria.

Eskom said Marokane will be responsible for providing strategic leadership to the gas-to-liquids refinery (GTL&R) in Mosselbay and the three exploration and offshore production units.

Formerly a chief financial officer of construction group Group Five, O'Flaherty occupies a similar position at Al Naboodah Construction Group in Dubai at the moment.

O'Flaherty's and Bulunga's appointments would fill crucial vacancies on Eskom's executive committee, as both positions have been unoccupied for more than a year. Eskom has a serious shortage of engineering skills while the finance director's position is crucial to its fund-raising plans for its infrastructure investment programme.

Only the position of CEO is now vacant in that committee.

Eskom executive chair Mpho Makwana, until recently chairperson of the board's human resources committee, vowed to Fin24.com last week to fill all the key senior posts before his six-month assignment as caretaker runs out. "My duty is to restore stability to Eskom," he said. He challenged the public to look at the organisation in six months and "be the judge if I have performed my duties".
