Harare - South African visitors have continued to keep Zimbabwe’s tourism sector alive at least in terms of numbers, latest statistics released by the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) show.
In its Tourism Trends and Statistics Report released this week, the ZTA said more than 170 000 tourists out of a total 404 282 came from South Africa during the first quarter of 2013.
Last year visitors from South Africa numbered 133 033 out of a total 346 299 for the period under review.
“South Africa continues to be the key source market in Mainland Africa with a market share of 49% of arrivals which is a 6 percentage point increase from 43% in 2012,” said the report.
The ZTA added that although South Africa registered a relative growth of 28%, it should be noted that in absolute terms this is 37 294 which is comparable to total arrivals from Mozambique during the same period.
Overall, African visitors dominated tourist arrivals in Zimbabwe, accounting for 86% of the market share. This was followed by Europe (8%), Asia (3%) and the Americas (3%).
There was a general increase from markets within the Southern African Development Community region, especially Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia, and this is mostly attributable to regional trade and commerce within the region.
Most of the tourist arrivals into the country (73%) resulted from visitors on holiday and those visiting friends and relatives.
Giving an analysis of the results, the ZTA said while Zimbabwe “receives a lot of arrivals in the region after South, they are low spenders as the bulk of them are from Mainland Africa compared to a basket of high spenders from overseas who are attracted by Islands such as Mauritius”.
