Johannesburg - Trade conditions improved in February despite
a slow start in January, as reflected in the Trade Activity Index (TAI)
released by the SA Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Sacci) on Wednesday.
"The non-seasonally adjusted TAI increased by 9
points to 57 in February 2012, while the seasonally adjusted TAI gained 6
points," Sacci said.
Last year the TAI increased from 49 in January to 56 the
following month, but then started to lose momentum.
The TAI is a composite index of sales volumes, new orders,
supplier deliveries, inventory levels and employment. A reading of 50 reflects
no change, and above 50 indicates a positive level. Below 50 is negative.
"All components of trade activity improved on their
January 2011 positions," said Sacci.
The sales volume index recovered by 14 points and improved
on the seasonal high of 60 in November 2011.
The Trade Expectations Index increased by five points to 67
between January and February.
"The six-month outlook for all the components of trade
improved in February 2012."
Sacci said continued economic disruptions because of protests would be detrimental to trade conditions.
