Harare - South Africa is now the second-biggest buyer of Zimbabwe’s tobacco, after it imported 13.7 million kilograms of tobacco from that country.
According to latest figures released by Zimbabwe's Tobacco Industry Marketing Board, South Africa imported 13 761 871 kg of tobacco worth US$43.7m.
This means SA has moved to second place in the just-ended selling season, up from third position in 2012 when it bought 6 million kg worth $19.6m.
The average price paid by buyers from South Africa was however much lower than the norm at $3.18/kg, compared with the $8.29 and $8.36 paid by Chinese and Hong Kong buyers respectively.
Tobacco has become one of Zimbabwe's biggest foreign currency earners after the country exported tobacco worth $349.2m during the 2013 selling season, which ended on September 13.
Total production for the season was at 166.6 million kg, 16% more than 2012 production. The seasonal average price closed at $3.67/kg, one cent more than the previous season.
