Johannesburg - South Africa's mining output fell 10.1% year-on-year in August, from a revised 7% in July, Statistics SA said on Thursday.
The largest negative growth rates were recorded for platinum group metals (PGMs) were down -45,0%, diamonds (-30,2%) and "other" non-metallic minerals (-24,1%).
The main contributors to the 10.1% decrease were PGMs (contributing -11.6 percentage points) and gold (contributing -1.1 percentage points).
Seasonally adjusted mining production decreased by 3.1% in August 2014 compared with July 2014.
This followed month-on-month changes of 1.6% in July 2014 and -1.1% in June 2014.
Seasonally adjusted mining production decreased by 1.1% in the three months ended August 2014 compared with the previous three months.
The main contributor to the 1.1% decrease was PGMs (contributing -1,6 percentage points).
Iron ore was a significant positive contributor (contributing 1.0 percentage point).
Key findings regarding mineral sales for July 2014:
Mineral sales decreased by 5.9% year-on-year in July 2014. Eight of the eleven mineral groups and minerals reported negative growth rates during this period.
The largest negative growth rates, together with their contributions, were recorded in the following mineral groups and minerals:
- Manganese ore (-28,6% and contributing -1.4 percentage points);
- Copper (-22,2% and contributing -0.3 of a percentage point);
- Iron ore (-12.3% and contributing -2.0 percentage points);
- PGMs (-10.6% and contributing -2.3 percentage points);
and
- Coal (-7.8% and contributing -2.2 percentage points).
Seasonally adjusted mineral sales at current prices increased by 6.5% in July 2014 compared with June 2014.
This followed month-on-month changes of -7.0% in June 2014 and -3.8% in May 2014.
