Johannesburg - There have been incidents of fuel shortages in some inland areas, the energy department said on Wednesday.
"The department is monitoring the situation closely and there is a dedicated team working with industry on the matter," spokesperson Ndivhuwo Khangale said in a statement.
The situation was partly a consequence of the unplanned shutdown of some refineries.
However, this had now been resolved, he said.
"Companies like Engen, who are on a planned extended shut-down, have been importing fuel and are continuously making arrangements with other oil companies."
Khangale added the ploughing season was delayed due to the late rains, which meant there was increased demand for diesel in November as farmers stocked up.
"However, the situation will improve particularly as industries are shutting down for the festive season and the demand of diesel will decrease."
Khangale said the focus now turned to motorists and public transport.
"Delivery of fuel is continuing, and priority has been given to holiday destination routes.
"The coastal areas are not affected at all by the fuel shortages," he said.
