SA farmers to explore Georgia

Cape Town - A number of South African farmers have expressed an interest in agricultural opportunities in Georgia, agricultural union TAU SA said on Thursday.

"Many farmers who no longer seen an opportunity to produce food in South Africa as well as other persons are very interested to go there to make investments," it said in a statement.

TAU earlier this year concluded a formal agreement with Georgia on sharing South African agricultural experience and skills, and in October the union sent over a "fact-finding mission".

It said on Thursday that it was organising two tours to Georgia for interested South African farmers in the new year, one from January 24 to 29, and the other from February 7 to 11.

The tours would allow farmers "to get a clearer view on agricultural opportunities" in Georgia.

A website has been set up on farming opportunities for South Africans in the former Soviet territory: www.boers.ge.

TAU general manager Bennie van Zyl was currently in Georgia for three months to study conditions there.

TAU said conditions in Georgia were favourable for investment, not only in primary agriculture, but also other sectors of the economy.

It said the Georgian government had implemented stimulating tax policies to encourage production rather than putting a damper on entrepreneurs.

In addition the government had so completely turned around the crime situation - once as bad as South Africa's - that single women could now walk through dark parks at night without fear of assault.
