Johannesburg - South Africa has entered into a bilateral agreement with Argentina on co-operation in the agricultural sector, it was announced on Tuesday.
Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson signed the agreement with her Argentinian counterpart Norberto Yauhar in Pretoria last Thursday, the ministry said in a statement.
This was the countries' fourth agriculture agreement.
"The signing of the agreement will extend to exchanging ideas on fisheries-related issues," said Joemat-Pettersson.
"Agriculture will benefit from this partnership since it is our mission to open markets in countries that are not our traditional trading partners," she said.
Joemat-Pettersson said relationships with countries in central and south America would be of benefit to South Africa.
"Our partnership with Argentina falls squarely within this framework of fostering ties. Opening markets is an invaluable way of contributing to job creation for South African citizens," she said.
The ministers also discussed issues related to trade policies, world food security and bilateral co-operation.
"This agreement will enhance South-South co-operation at all levels, in particular in the field of improvement of agriculture production efficiencies, share of technologies and promotion and facilitation of trade in agricultural products," said Yauhar.
He invited Joemat-Pettersson to visit Argentina to study its models.
Argentina is scheduled to help South Africa host the Food and Agriculture Organisation World Forestry Congress in Durban in 2015.
