Revamp to set groundwork for NHI

Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma said on Thursday that the government had identified "critical" social infrastructure projects in addition to its drive to build other infrastructure to boost the economy.

"These include projects aimed at laying the basis for the National Health Insurance system such as the refurbishment of hospitals and nurses’ homes," said Zuma.

R300m has been allocated for the preparatory work towards building new universities in Mpumalanga and Northern Cape.

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan is expected to indicate in his budget speech later this month whether or not more resources would be dedicated to the NHI.

Zuma singled out SA's bid to host the Square Kilometre Array radio telescope as another major project.

The winning bid will be announced next month. "We urge you to support the country’s bid," he said.

He also named SA's participation in an African rail corridor championed by the New Partnership for Africa's Development (Nepad).
