Johannesburg - A drop in the retail price of petrol from next week should bring some relief to commuters, UASA the union said on Friday.
Earlier, the department of energy announced that petrol 93 ULP
and LRP and petrol 95 ULP and LRP would both drop in price by 21c a litre in August.
"Taxi and other public transport fleet owners should pass on the
benefit of the lower petrol price to commuters who don't have their own transport and have no choice but to make use of public
transport," UASA spokesperson André Venter said.
"These are the consumers who feel the effect of the recession
the most and they deserve some relief."
He said the same should be applicable to food prices.
"Together with the positive PPI [producer price inflation] and CPI [consumer price inflation] figures released earlier this week, the announcement may just give the South African Reserve Bank sufficient leeway for a further interest cut this year," Venter said.
