Johannesburg - Consumers are being over-charged for liquid petroleum gas, the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) said on Thursday.
"This is something that NRCS takes seriously since it is against the requirement of the Trade Metrology Act," the NRCS said.
Many people were overcharged when they handed in their personal gas cylinders which were not completely empty for refilling, it said.
Under the act, the owner of a gas cylinder could be charged only for the actual amount of gas used to fill it.
This did not apply to gas companies, which merely exchanged an empty cylinder for a full one, the NRCS said.
"With the price of gas on the increase, NRCS urges consumers to insist on having their gas cylinders weighed on a suitable, verified scale before filling commences and after to determine the actual weight that they should pay for.
"NRCS will take the necessary corrective action against all non-compliant retailers," it said.
