Register for your e-tags, pleads minister

Cape Town - The implementation of e-tolling in Gauteng next month is a milestone in the life of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project, Cabinet said on Thursday.

Briefing media following Cabinet's regular Wednesday fortnightly meeting, Public Service Minister Lindiwe Sisulu urged motorists in the province to buy their e-tags.

"Motorists who have not registered for e-tolling are encouraged please to do so, to ensure they qualify for the discounted rates," she said.

The announcement comes as public opposition to e-tolling continues to mount following the announcement by Transport Minister Dipuo Peters on Wednesday that e-tolling would commence on December 3.

The Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance (Outa) expressed disappointment at the move, saying it had ominous consequences for the country.

Outa called on motorists to resist the urge to register, insisting drivers were not forced to buy e-tags.
