Johannesburg - The number of people employed in South Africa's non-agricultural sectors decreased by 0.8% in the second quarter of this year compared with the first quarter, Statistics South Africa said on Tuesday.
Thousands of jobs have been lost, particularly in the key mining and manufacturing sector, as South Africa struggles with its first recession since 1992 after a sharp decline in both domestic and global demand for goods.
Statistics South Africa said a survey showed the number of people employed in the formal non-agricultural business sector decreased by about 67 000 to 8.259 million employees from March to June.
This amounted to an annual decrease of 2.3% compared with the second quarter of 2008.
In July Stats SA said South Africa's jobless rate increased slightly to 23.6% of the labour force in the second quarter of 2009 from 23.5% in the first quarter, with the recession pushing the number of people who gave up looking for work sharply higher.
It said the total number of unemployed people stood at 4.125 million in the second quarter.
