Rea Vaya strike illegal, says City of Jhb

JOhannesburg - The Rea Vaya bus drivers embarked on an illegal strike on Tuesday morning, the City of Johannesburg said.

"The City of Johannesburg apologises to [Rea Vaya] passengers and will provide updates on the situation," said spokesperson Benny Makgoga in a statement.

The buses servicing the T1 route along Soweto Highway and feeders from Naledi, Protea Glen, Jabavu, Mofolo and Eldorado Park were among the services affected.

The city could not provide any further information.

Piotrans, the company that manages the operations of Rea Vaya's buses, was not immediately available for comment.

The SA Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu) was also not available for comment.

In April, the bus drivers embarked on a strike leaving commuters around Johannesburg stranded for almost a week.

The drivers demanded labour brokers be banned, the code of conduct be reviewed, senior staff members choose their shifts, and the union be introduced during the induction of new workers.

The union and Piotrans reached an agreement.
