Johannesburg - South Africa's unemployment problems are "not just about policies", says Absa Group [JSE:ASA] chief executive Maria Ramos.

Addressing a Black Management Forum seminar on the role of commercial banks in socio-economic development at the Soweto campus of the University of Johannesburg on Monday night, Ramos said unemployment was about "whether we execute plans we put in place, whether we deliver on the things we say we'll do. It's about skills. We need to have growth that creates jobs."

The real challenge for banks post the economic recession was identifying opportunities for investment, said Ramos.

Cellphone and internet banking were among the fastest growing units of the bank, with more consumers and small businesses using this form of banking as opposed to traditional branch banking.
