R1.8m donations for families of police

Johannesburg - The families of police officials killed in the line of duty last year will each receive a R40 000 donation, Crime Line said on Sunday.

Crime Line head Yusuf Abramjee said the money, which was raised during a radio fundraiser last year, would be handed over to the 38 families on Wednesday.

"It shows that the nation is really concerned about cop killings and we want to make a difference," Abramjee said.

A "goodwill payment" would also be made to the family of Constable Francis Rasuge, whose remains were found buried at the home of her killer William Nkuna on March 20, nearly eight years after she went missing.

"It was decided to add the Rasuge family to the list of beneficiaries because Francis' disappearance gripped the nation. After eight years, there is finally closure," Abramjee said.

A company of undertakers has also offered to donate a tombstone and conduct the burial free of charge.

Abramjee thanked the public for their donations to help the families of the police's "fallen heroes".
