Johannesburg - The total actual capital expenditure by public sector institutions fell by R7.6bn from R177.1bn in 2010 to R169.5bn in 2011‚ Statistics SA said in its report on capital expenditure by the public sector released on Thursday.
Actual capital expenditure on new construction works fell R6.7bn between 2010 and 2011.
There were also decreases in the actual capital expenditure on plant‚ machinery and equipment (down R701m)‚ land and existing buildings (a R561m fall) and other fixed assets (off R244m).
There were increases in the actual capital expenditure on transport equipment (up R464m) as well as leased assets and investment property (a R121m rise).
Public corporations contributed the largest proportion to the total capital expenditure by public sector institutions in 2011 at R80.5bn.
This was followed by municipalities (R34.4bn)‚ provincial government (R21.5bn)‚ extra-budgetary accounts and funds (R16bn)‚ national government (R11.3bn) and higher education (R5.6bn).
