Prominent economist dies

Johannesburg - Respected veteran economist Tony Twine has died after a short illness.

Twine, 57, died on Sunday at Milpark hospital after suffering from a heart attack last week.

A senior director at Econometrix, Twine worked with the company for almost 30 years after joining it in 1983.

He voiced his support for fracking in the Karoo, calling for South Africa to speed up the exploration process which could lead to the creation of 700 000 jobs.

Twine matriculated from Pinelands High School and graduated from UCT, according to the Econometrix website.

He studied at the University of SA while working for Mobil Oil Southern Africa where he worked extensively on demand models for gasoline and diesel.

He joined Datsun Nissan, where he worked as senior economist and market research manager.

He was well known for his work in the motor industry, and advised the government on energy policy.
