Poultry tariff hike good for jobs - Cosatu

Johannesburg - The increase in import tariffs for poultry will ensure job security, the Congress of SA Trade Unions said on Wednesday.

"Any price-rising effect should be compensated for by the creation and retention of decent jobs and the long-term survival of the poultry sector," Cosatu spokesperson Patrick Craven said.

Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies announced on Monday that import tariffs for poultry had been raised by an average of 8.75%.

Import tariffs for whole birds would see the biggest increase, from 27% to the maximum 82% allowed by the World Trade Organisation, Davies told reporters.

"The decision followed an application by the SA Poultry Association to the International Trade Administration Commission to increase the tariffs in March this year."

Cosatu commended the department's decision. Craven said the poultry industry directly employed 48 000 people. Another 60 000 were indirectly employed in supporting sectors.

"Cosatu hopes that government will hold producers accountable for the promise to increase jobs."

He urged the government to stop making trade agreements with countries that prohibited tariff increases. He said such agreements would result in South Africa being unable to protect its industries and consequently jobs.
