Pretoria - The new buzzword in Potchefstroom is "olé" after the Spanish soccer team has decided to make the North West university town its base for the Fifa World Cup.
Town leaders reckon the service could net the town direct income of R40m a year for the next three years. The Spaniards are Europe's soccer champions and ranked first in the world.
Investments made to realise this amounted R100m. Theo Venter, special adviser attached to the North West University (NWU), said the biggest outlay has been on accommodation, improved security and infrastructure such as roads, as well as the extension of the runway for the town's airport.
Most of these projects had, however, been on the drawing board anyway, and would unlock other benefits for the town.
Thanks to its outstanding sports facilities, high atmospheric pressure and sunny climate, Potchefstroom has become a favourite place for foreign athletes to exercise over the past two decades or so.
Last year around 1 000 athletes did this. A "sports village" with 80 rooms (160 beds) is nearing completion, the sports complex's soccer fields are being upgraded and small improvements are being made to the roads and road signs.
The Spaniards' one concern is the poor state of the roads between Gauteng and Potchefstroom.
This has led to a request for suitable landing facilities so that the team can fly back and forth from where they play matches.
