Poland's richest man, Jan Kulczyk, dies at 65

Warsaw - Poland's richest man, Jan Kulczyk, died on Tuesday night at 65 due to surgery complications, a spokesperson at Kulczyk Holding said.

Kulczyk has been on the top of Forbes richest Poles list for years, with assets value exceeding 15 billion zlotys ($4.01bn) this year.

A source said that Kulczyk's death was unexpected and the result of a "routine" medical treatment conducted outside Poland.

Kulczyk Holding spokesperson, Marta Wysocka declined to comment beyond saying he had died as a result of surgery complications.

Kulczyk's assets include chemicals group Ciech, energy companies Polenergia and Serinus Energy and a number of worldwide oil and gas businesses.

His most valued asset though was the 3% stake in the brewing company SABMiller.

Since the start of this year Kulczyk has sold stakes in some of his biggest ventures, including Ophir Energy and Polenergia, raising questions on his nearest strategic plans.

Kulczyk left two children from his first marriage - Dominika and Sebastian. Sebastian has been supervising the family's business since end of 2013 when he took the position of chief executive at Kulczyk Investments, which assembles Kulczyk major assets.
