Johannesburg - Pikitup has laid a charge of theft against The Star newspaper for allegedly having a document which it claims is illegally in its possession, the newspaper reported on Thursday.
This comes after the newspaper published articles about alleged wrongdoings, irregular activities and tender collusion within Pikitup based on a forensic audit by Ernst & Young, which was reportedly seen by the publication.
Editor Makhudu Sefara said two policemen from the Hillbrow police station arrived at The Star's Johannesburg offices on Wednesday, saying they were conducting a preliminary investigation following charges laid by Pikitup managing director Amanda Nair.
Sefara said the officers were unable to provide information as to what documents were being referred to, and were vague about the allegation.
"The police who came here were woefully unprepared. They could not tell me where, when and by whom the document was stolen," said Sefara.
An application for the return of documents has also been launched in the Johannesburg High Court, which is being contested by the newspaper.
In June, The Star reported Nair had allegedly awarded a tender to a company that was allegedly implicated in fraud in a forensic investigation. It reported that waste collection company Pikitup's bid adjudication committee questioned the decision, and was against it.
