Johannesburg - The former acting director of Pikitup was not
fired, but his contract was not renewed, the City of Johannesburg said on
Tuesday.
"The city wishes to dismiss these unfounded claims and
wants to place it on record that Mr Lawrence Boya was not fired. Instead, his
contract has expired," spokesperson Nthatisi Modingoane said in a
statement.
Heads of municipal entities, such as Pikitup, were employed
on a fixed term contract and the positions were subject to the city's
institutional review process, Modingoane said.
On Monday, the SA Municipal Workers' Union's (Samwu) Gauteng
organiser Menzi Luthuli said in a statement that Boya was replaced with a
permanent appointment.
He welcomed the "brave decision" not to give Boya
a permanent position.
"The decision not to appoint Mr Boya does not come as a
surprise, given his track record in the Eastern Cape provincial government and
his recent arrest, relating to alleged corruption and fraud, as reported widely
in the media."
Boya and four others have been charged with defrauding the
Eastern Cape health department of about R11m.
Boya was a superintendent general in the provincial health department at the time of the alleged crime.
