Johannesburg - A three year wage increase agreement for hospitality workers being trained for the 2010 Soccer World Cup was reached on Wednesday, the industry's bargaining council said.

Spokesperson Brian Magqaza said representatives of about 26 500 employees and 6 000 businesses reached an agreement that would be applicable from June 2008 to May 2011.

Magqaza said the agreement would ensure the stability and co-operative workplace relations needed for the World Cup and economic growth.

"The workforce and businesses in the hospitality sector will be focusing on service excellence for the millions of visitors coming to the 2010 Soccer World Cup."

Employees and commercial businesses covered by this agreement included, fast food outlets, taverns, cafes, restaurants and catering facilities.

Workers would get CPIX plus 2.5% from June 2009 to May 2011, said Magqaza.

The collective agreement reached introduced increases on hourly rates.

The hourly rate of chefs and managers increased by 11% to R16.85. That of bartenders, cashiers, clerks, security guards and supervisors increased 12% to R10.33. The rate of assistant bartenders and cashiers was hiked 11% to R9.86.

Hospitality employees were represented by the SA Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union, the Industrial Commercial and Allied Workers Union and the Hotel, Liquor, Catering, Commercial and Allied workers Union of South Africa.
