Parliament to debate budget votes

Johannesburg - The ANC is looking forward to the tabling of budget policy statements by various government departments on Tuesday, the party said.

"These budget votes flow from the state-of-the-nation address... and are intended to provide practical and tangible detail on how government intends to fulfil the commitments contained in the 2014 general elections manifesto of the ANC," spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said in a statement.

"It is our belief that the budget votes will show clear alignment and congruence between the commitments the organisation made during the elections and allocation of resources."

Extended public committees are expected to debate budget votes in parliament for government departments on Tuesday.

Kodwa said the African National Congress wanted to see budget votes focused on supporting four important sectors - energy infrastructure, transport infrastructure, information and communication technology, and water and sanitation.

There needed to be decisive intervention to grow the economy, restore dignity, and improve lives.

The new water and sanitation department, headed by former Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane, would deliver its maiden budget vote speech.

"We believe that the department... has a critical role to play towards the attainment of this vision, particularly by ensuring that we accelerate the provision of decent social infrastructure," said Kodwa.

"The department will also bring us a step closer to the abolishment of water trading and the provision of quality, clean water to every household."

He said the ANC government has expanded access to basic services. However, backlogs remained and service quality was uneven.

"We have no doubt that the strategic focus of the budget votes will reflect this urgency, commit to improve the quality and consistency of service and resource it appropriately... ."
