Johannesburg - South Africa's headline producer inflation accelerated to 8.2% year-on-year in March from 7.7% in February, Statistics South Africa said on Thursday.
Economists polled by Reuters had predicted PPI would quicken only slightly to 7.8%.
On a month-on-month basis, prices at the factory gate rose by 1.3% in March, the same rate as February, against market forecasts of a 0.9% increase.
Stats SA releases five industry-specific producer price indices, with final manufactured goods representing the headline number.
