Numsa seeks metal export ban

Johannesburg - Numsa would press on with a demand for an outright ban on the export of scrap metal to protect South African production, the union said in Johannesburg on Thursday.

General secretary Irvin Jim said the union was pleased that there were some signs that the economic development department was taking their demand for the control of scrap metal exports seriously.

It also welcomed the preferential pricing system as a way of prioritising South African consumption of scrap metal.

"We nevertheless reaffirm our view that an outright ban on the export of scrap metal is the only truly effective mechanism to protect South African production and further our objectives of growing industrialisation."

This stance followed its first central committee meeting of the year, held from Monday March 4 to Thursday.
