Johannesburg - South Africa's economy was not heading for recession, with strong investment growth likely to compensate for lower consumer spending, Treasury Director-General Lesetja Kganyago said on Wednesday.
"We think that the South African economy is actually still strong," he told Reuters.
"Let us not fool ourselves, there are difficult times ahead ... but you cannot talk of a recession, of us heading for a recession this year."
Ratings agency Moody's said in a credit opinion that Africa's biggest economy may veer towards recession at the end of 2008.
