Johannesburg - No new forms of gambling will be approved until a new framework for the industry are in place, the department of trade and industry said on Thursday.
"The Minister (Rob Davies) ... clarified that the status quo prevails and that no new forms of gambling will be permitted until the new framework is in place," said spokesperson Sidwell Medupe.
This means that licence applications for recognised forms of gambling will be subject to the present legislation.
The Gambling Review Report advised that "the current limit of 40 casinos in the country is appropriate and should be maintained in future".
Medupe said Davies remained "neutral" on this point and would await parliament's recommendation on this.
The Gambling Review Commission was established in December 2009 by Davies to look into issues surrounding gambling in the context of contemporary South African society.
