Nigerians fork out billions for airtime

Cape Town - Nigerians cough up 447.8bn naira (R29bn) on recharge cards each month, which is substantially more than they pay for petrol, electricity and rent, according to a report in the Vanguard.

The daily newspaper reported on Wednesday that this was revealed by an ICT expert during a workshop for legislators that was organised by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Gbenga Oyebode of the law firm Aluko & Oyebode said Nigerians' monthly expenditure for rent is N149.1bn, petrol is N128bn, while they spend N144.8bn on Kerosene and N91.8bn on electricity.

MTN is the leading telecommunications company in Nigeria with 55.7 million subscribers, according to NCC data for the fourth quarter of 2013.

General manager of consumer marketing for MTN Kolawole Oyeyemi said, according to a CAJ News report published on Nigeria24 that Nigeria telecoms consumers were the most protected in the country.

He said every sanction imposed on telecoms firms was for the benefit of consumers.

Nigeria, together with Kenya, has also been ranked by Standard Bank as the top two countries in Africa to adopt mobile payment technology.
