Johannesburg - Advocate Oliver Josie has been appointed head of the Competition Commission's new cartel unit, the commission said on Thursday.
"Investigation of cartels is at the core of competition regulation because it deals with the most serious form of anti-competitive behaviour in the economy and we have confidence that Advocate Josie will help us in dealing with this," said Commissioner Shan Ramburuth.
Ramburuth said the commission had seen a "substantial increase" in the number of cartel cases.
The unit will investigate contraventions of the Competition Act such as price fixing, market allocation and collusive tendering.
Josie was a director with the former Scorpions. Prior to joining the commission he was director of group forensic services at Standard Bank.
"Advocate Josie has extensive experience in crime risk governance, enforcement and legal practice," Ramburuth said.
