Johannesburg - Cabinet has approved the new lottery board appointed with Professor Ntshengedzeni Alfred Nevhutanda serving as the non-executive chair, the National Lotteries Board said on Thursday.

Spokesperson Sershan Naidoo said cabinet had approved Minister of Trade and Industry Rob Davies' appointment of the new board, after the previous board's term came to an end on December 2.

Nevhutanda has a background in academia, business and politics, with particular experience in strategy formulation and direction and management.

He served as a member of the Limpopo legislature for five years and was chairperson of All Chairpersons of Operating Licence Boards in South Africa.

He also served on the lotteries distribution trust fund for arts, culture and national heritage allocations, a position he has resigned since his new appointment.

Advocate George Negota will serve a second term on the board.

Other members of the board are chartered accountant Mathukana Mokoka and Obed Shabangu, who had extensive experience on boards and board-type committees.

Ndileka Loyilani, Govindasamy Reddy and Zodwa Ntuli were the other board appointments.

The new members assume duty in December and will remain in office for a period of five years.

The previous board served two terms of five years and an additional year after that.

The duties of the board are to regulate the licence to operate the national lottery, which is currently under licence to Gidani.

"The board is also responsible for regulating 'other lotteries', which include lottery-type competitions run by NGOs, private lotteries, lotteries incidental to exempt entertainment and promotional competitions."

According to legislation on the lottery, the board members also become trustees of the lotteries distribution trust fund which provides money to welfare, sports and arts non-profit organisations.

The previous board paid almost R7bn to various non-governmental organisations.

"We will continue to fulfil the mandate as outlined in [the] Lotteries Act and related regulations," said Nevhutanda

"We will also continue in efforts to streamline the funding process in order to ensure that funding is accessible to the vulnerable in our society."
