Johannesburg - The Independent Labour Caucus (ILC) had been discussing the 13-day public sector strike with Minister Richard Baloyi, but there was no breakthrough yet, its chairperson said on Monday.
"The ILC expects this week to be a 'knife edge' week during which a possible breakthrough may be announced," Chris Klopper said in a statement.
"Various attempts have been initiated to discuss this matter personally with the minister of the DPSA (department of public service and administration), but no breakthrough can be announced at this stage."
Klopper said it was now up to the public service and administration minister to resolve the situation, which had seen some 1.3 million public servants, including health workers and teachers, staying away from work since August 18.
"Further procrastination can no longer be tolerated and the ball is now in the court of the minister," said Klopper.
The ILC would meet at 10:00 on Monday to "consider options", he added.
Both the ILC and Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) were demanding an 8.6% salary increase and R1 000 monthly housing allowance, while the government was offering seven percent and R700, excluding an 1.5% pay progression for some workers.
