Cape Town - Energy regulator Nersa CEO Phindile Baleni has resigned, the Energy Department said in a statement.
The announcement comes amid the Eskom crisis and as pressure mounts on the regulator on electricity tariffs.
The department said it will soon embark on the process of recruiting a new CEO.
Whilst the search for a replacement CEO is ongoing, an interim CEO is to be appointed, the department said.
Baleni, then still Nzimande, was appointed on May 1 2011.
Nersa spokesperson Poppie Mahlungu confirmed to Fin24 via telephone that Baleni had resigned.
Chris Yelland, MD of EE Publishers, tweeted: "One can only wonder if the resignation of CEO Ms Phindile Baleni is a result of the immense political pressure Nersa faces at this time."
The department thanked Baleni for her "commitment, dedication and excellent contribution to the energy industry in the country and beyond", during her term as Nersa CEO.
It said she is resigning to pursue other interests.
