NUM: Intimidation rife at Amplats strike

Rustenburg - Non-striking workers at Anglo Platinum [JSE:AMS] (Amplats) in Rustenburg were intimidated on Friday, the National Union of Mineworkers said.

"There has been a high level of intimidation since last night [Thursday]. People were stopped on their way to work," said NUM regional coordinator Mxhasi Stheti.

"There is intimidation although no serious incidents have been reported," he said.

Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) members at Amplats downed tools on Friday, protesting against the retrenchment of 3 300 people.

At Khuseleka mine shaft one, a group of Amcu members shouted at a woman walking to work. The woman got into a car that drove to the shaft.

Later the group marched to the shaft demanding that all cars parked inside be removed.

A group of terrified women parked their cars on the side of the road some distance from the shaft, afraid of going to the shaft.

A woman identifying herself only as Magda said they were afraid of going to work.

"We cannot go in. We are afraid," she said.

Workers from various Amplats shafts gathered at Thembelani mine near Zakhale informal settlement waiting for Amcu president Joseph Mathunjwa to speak to them.

He was expected to brief them about a meeting held with Amplats.

The union and the company held a last minute meeting in a bid to avoid the strike.

The meeting was held in Johannesburg on Thursday and continued on Friday morning.

Police were keeping watch in the affected areas.
