Cape Town - MyCiTi commuters can expect a fare hike from July 1 as the City of Cape Town’s annual budget comes into effect.
And to encourage customers to travel outside the peak service periods, the time frame of this period has been reduced.
Cape Town mayoral committee member for transport, Brett Herron, told News24 that despite the price hikes, the service remained one of the cheaper public transport options.
“Over the past financial year, there has been an increase in labour and fuel costs, all of which have been absorbed in this fare increase.
“To limit the impact of this, we have reduced the peak hour period in which travel is more expensive and introduced a monthly package which allows unlimited travel at a set amount.”
According to an advisory sent to customers, the former peak period of 06:30 to 08:30 and 16:00 to 18:00 has been amended to 06:45 to 08:00 and 16:15 to 17:30.
During these periods, the standard peak fare for 0km to 5 km will increase to R11.50 in comparison to last year’s R8.90.
Off-peak fares for 0km to 5km will increase from R6.80 to R7.80.
The monthly package, available from next month for those who take longer journeys, costs R530 and is valid for 30 days. This excludes the airport route, for which the monthly package charge is R780.
The price of the Myconnect card, which expires after three years, has decreased by R5 to R30.
Mover packages, which work on a points system, will also be introduced for between R30 and R1 000.
Loading these points onto your card translates to an averaging saving of 30% on fares on all journeys.
The airport premium fare will increase from R56.20 to R61.40 around the clock.
