The retail price of all grades of petrol will increase by 29c on May 4. The price of petrol 95 ULP (unleaded petrol) in Gauteng will be R10.25 a litre from Wednesday. At the coast, it will cost R9.95 a litre.
The price of diesel with a 0.05% and 0.005% sulphur content will increase by 16c a litre.
The wholesale price of illuminating paraffin will increase by 15c a litre.
The single maximum national retail price for illuminating paraffin will go up by 20c a litre.
An increase in the global price of oil is one of the reasons given for the big hike, although the department said that the rand had strengthened against the dollar compared to the previous month.
