Cape Town - The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) has reported a 25% increase in its case load over the past five years.
CCMA director Nerine Kahn told the Parliamentary committee on labour on Tuesday the current load was at 154 279 on March 31.
"The rise in the workload tells us that there is a lot at stake in the economy, and this places the services of the CCMA at high demand," she said.
Kahn said the rise in case load was a reflection of what was happening in the economy. A wave of wobbles in the economy had triggered a wave of case loads, she said.
Although the CCMA posted an unqualified audit in the 2010/2011 financial, the director lamented the budgetary constraints faced by the organisation.
She said the constraints posed a challenge in the work of the dispute resolution organisation.
Despite the problems faced, CCMA would pursue its programme of becoming a premier dispute resolution body.
