Johannesburg - The hotel and catering industry expects the biggest increase in hirings to come in the third quarter, according to the latest Manpower Employment Outlook Survey.
The survey, which is conducted among 752 employers, shows that more staff are expected to be hired in the third quarter of 2010.
Of the respondents, 14% expect to employ more staff, as against 7% that will reduce staff and 78% that expect no change. The overall employment outlook is +7%.
The net figure is determined by subtracting the percentage of employers expecting a reduction in the next quarter from the percentage expecting an increase in total employment over the same period.
According to Standard Bank economist Danelee van Dyk, the hotel and catering industry is the only one that will derive significant benefit from the World Cup soccer tournament.
But there are significant risks ahead once the tournament is over, when the demand for staff in the industry will fall as tourist numbers reduce. Many will lose their jobs.
Eight out of 10 sectors expect growth in hiring, but the manufacturing and the building industries expect their figures to be down 7% and 4% respectively.
According to Van Dyk, prospects for the building industry will not improve soon because of the surfeit of unskilled workers following recent years’ considerable expansion in the industry.
