Harare - Zimbabwe will experience more power cuts after Mozambique reduced supplies over unpaid debt, a state daily reported on Saturday.
"Mozambique has reduced electricity supplies to Zimbabwe from 300 megawatts to 195 megawatts over a staggering debt of US$35m ... " The Herald newspaper reported.
Zimbabwe imports 40% of its power needs: 100 megawatts a month from the Democratic Republic of Congo, 300 megawatts from Mozambique and up to 450 and 300 megawatts from South Africa and Zambia respectively.
Its once-model economy has been on a downturn for the past six years, characterised by galloping inflation and shortages of foreign currency and basic commodities.
Power supplies have become erratic with blackouts lasting more than 10 hours. Forests on the oustkirts of cities are at risk due to increasing demand for firewood.
