Cape Town - Former director general of communications Mamodupi Mohlala has been chosen by Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies to head the new national consumer commission.
The ministry said Davies on Tuesday consulted parliament's portfolio committee on trade and industry on the appointment, as required by law, and would now approach the cabinet to finalise the process.
Mohlala was dismissed by Communications Minister Siphiwe Nyanda in July following an "irreparable breakdown" in their relationship after they clashed over tender procedures.
She contested the legality of her dismissal, arguing that only the president could fire a director general.
In a settlement reached in August, it was agreed Mohlala would take a month's leave during which time Public Service and Administration Minister Richard Baloyi would find a suitable post for her in the public service before September 27.
The deadline was missed, and the leave was then extended.
Davies' office said Mohlala's new job would see her steer the commission through a process of developing codes of fair consumer practice, as required by the new Consumer Protection Act.
The minister last month delayed the implementation of the act until April 2010, but the postponement does not extend to the establishment of the commission.
