Johannesburg - Artisans in the Eastern Cape will receive
R22.6m in skills training from the manufacturing, engineering and related services
sectoral education and training authority (Merseta), the provincial government
said on Thursday.
"Skills development has proven to be a foundation for
successful economies. It is an ingredient to achieve sustainable job creation
and economic development," said Eastern Cape premier Noxolo Kiviet.
The money would be disbursed over three years to Kiviet to
boost various training programmes in the sector, said Merseta spokesperson
Mzukisi Ndara.
It would benefit students undergoing experiential training
for the completion of P1 and P2 work-based learning programmes.
It would also be used to help 80 people with at least a
level two qualification complete their learnerships and trade tests.
In addition, 42 apprentices under contract would be able to
complete a three-year programme, while 150 engineering students would be
assisted with bridging programmes to complete their training.
Merseta CEO Raymond Patel said the agreement would uplift
people in rural areas.
"Skills development, job creation and poverty
alleviation go hand in hand. We are confident that this partnership will lead
to sustainable job creation for the youth and also address gender equality in
the process," he said.
