Johannesburg - Wholesale trade sales at constant prices for May grew by 8.7% year-on-year (y/y) compared with a 9.5% y/y growth in April‚ Statistics SA data showed on Thursday.

Wholesale trade sales increased by 14.6% y/y in nominal terms in May.

Measured in real terms‚ seasonally adjusted wholesale trade sales rose by 1% in May compared with April following month-on-month changes of 2.4% in April and -4.9% in March.

Measured in nominal terms (current prices)‚ wholesale trade sales increased by 13.7% for the three months ended May 2012 compared with the same period in 2011.

The three major contributors to this increase were dealers in solid‚ liquid and gaseous fuels and related products,
contributing 5.6 percentage points; machinery‚ equipment and supplies, contributing 2.6 percentage points; and food‚ beverages and tobacco, contributing 2 percentage points.
